The unprecedented increase in the number of vehicles has led to an increase in road accidents. Detecting and apprehending traffic violators has become a global necessity for authorities to reduce accidents and ensure road safety. Red light violations and speeding are major causes of road collisions. Offenders tend to break traffic rules if they believe they can do so with impunity.
Research indicates that a 15-year-old technique used for detecting red light violations involved a single camera to capture vehicle images and employ image processing methods. These systems primarily utilized frame differencing to compare the current and previous frames. Once detected, the video frames were used to capture license plates. However, these systems faced challenges, as false detections occurred due to lighting changes. Certain instances led to the system wrongly identifying red light violations when a vehicle was stationary at a red light or when non-vehicle objects, such as pedestrians or birds, crossed the boundary line.
